Sprint HTC Hero rooted, Custom ROMs to follow

XDA-Developers have once again come to save the day for smartphone users as the Sprint HTC Hero has now been rooted.  If the term ‘rooted’ is not clicking in your minds right now, just know that when a device is ‘rooted’ you are now able to install custom ROMs.  In even simpler terms this means that you will soon be able to load a variety of version of Android onto your Sprint HTC, namely Android 2.0 with Google Navigation.  Since we know HTC is currently working on incorporating their Sense UI into the latest version of Android, may of us will opt to skip the wait and run a vanilla Android 2.0 build so that we can enjoy the latest OS build immediately.  One additional newsworthy piece of information coming from the XDA-Developers is that apps2sd, the ability to run apps from your sd card, is already working.

    question about the capability of printing wirelessly from the Hero:

    Has anyone been able to successfully connect and print with a wireless printer? I have tried two apps (PrinterShare and Cypria Free – both free versions), and so far no luck. PrinterShare says I’m “paired” with the printer, but not connected. When I hit print on the phone, it reports that the print was successful, but nothing on the pinter’s end.

    With Cypria Free, it is supposed to search for and detect wireless printers. It does not find the printer and reports “no devices found”. By the way, other phones (non-Android based) have connected to the printer, so the issue is with the Hero.

    Both of these apps have paid versions as well, so it could be that the upgrade is necessary. But then why have the free versions of the app?

    It could also be that the Hero is just not compatible with the printer I used (HP Photosmart Premium C309g-m). This is listed as a possibility in the printer’s manual. Weird that is would not work on the Hero when it is compatible with a Nextel phone that is over 3 years old.

    Frustrating.

    I have the same exact problem Mike! You’re not alone on this one. Im going to research it some more, and hopefully something comes to, or someone else posts an answer here.
